Everyone Has Their Own Style

I had the opportunity today to work with an incredible coach who has a style very different from my own. I tend to be a little laid back and let the process go at it's own speed. Today however we were involved in a laser coaching session...translate get to the heart of the matter FAST.

She did so brilliantly in fact it almost took my breath away and for a moment I was unsettled. She got me through a very tough point in a matter of 20 minutes. I questioned if I would be able to do the same thing or if I would even want to.....or the inevitable....will I ever be as good as her?
Now mind you I come from a coaching back ground and none of this was new territory for me. I knew exactly where we were headed and I have had many of those AH HAH moments.

It is not always the same with a new client. Though my style might be different from hers it is not better or worse. It is just my style and I am striving to stay authentic to who I am ....knowing it will draw exactly the right clients to me....the incredible people that I want to serve.

It is good to be reminded tat we each have our own style and I can rest assured that in the coaching world that syle is always being used to benefit others. That is the cool and powerful part of it.....that's why I am a coach. I can express who I am and let others do the same.

Do You Fear Making a Mistake?

It has come to my attention recently through various paths that people in general have this fear of making a mistake. I sure do understand that because for many years I was held in the grip of that fear.
I got stuck in jobs and relationships and living arrangements when it was clear that they did not suit me. Why did I stay put. Well duh...I was afraid. I was not only afraid I was petrified of making a mistake. What if I made a choice that made things even worse? How would I ever recover from that?
I couldn't even entertain the possibility that making a change might actually improve my life....even if only in a small way. I couldn't visualize life being better. I figured I would just stay put. After all I knew the ins and outs of the situations I was in. They were comfortable in an uncomfortable sort of way.
Don't rock the boat I reasoned..it might get worse.
It was only when the uncomfortability outweighed everything else that I could decide to make a change ....even if it might be a change for the worse.
It wasn't of course. Life got better. Sure the transition time is always tough... but after that life really improved.
I hadn't made a mistake I had made a choice for myself and it worked out.
I wish I hadn't waited so long and as time has progressed I the fear of making a wrong choice has lessened.
I get help making choices if I need to...I get support and it just gets easier and the results are more positive.
There are always ways to get through the fear and get on with our lives if we want to.

Talk Show Host or Life Coach?

I was listening to Dr. Joy Brown on the radio the other day. I love Dr Brown...she shoots from the hip and has great common sense. I often find myself shaking my head in agreement.

The only thing I wonder about is that how do the people that call in to her show make out in the days, months, and weeks after? They call in with the desire to make some pretty big adjustments in their lives. They spill their guts and are advised to make a huge life change in the space of a few minutes. Though I often agree with the direction they are pointed...I often think......hmm, this is where a life coach would come in pretty handy.

A life coach would help you to get a life plan together to make those life changes. Your coach would then work with you as those changes were implemented and you were in a stronger place... a place you could live a more fulfilling life on your own.

Talk show doctors do have some great advice and suggestions. A life coach could really help you to implement them.

I am holding a contest on my website and this is one of the places you can enter. I am so excited about this and though I have already sent out an e-mail I will go over the details again.

Fear of Public Speaking

While I may not be terrified of public speaking, I am not as comfortable as I would like to be when it comes to getting up in front of a room full of strangers. What do I do about it? I practice at Toastmasters.

Why did I choose Toastmasters? Well it has been around for a long time and is quite established as a leader in the field of training public speakers. I also hoped to do some networking and get to know some new and different people.

I have achieved all of that. I get to practice my public speaking in front of a group of "strangers" (now becoming friends) and get lots of encouragement, support and constructive criticism. I get to network and I get to meet a large amount of people from diverse age ranges, cultural backgrounds and interests. It's great!

As the Toastmaster this evening I got to practice running a meeting, keeping it on track while still creating a comfortable space for everyone participating as well as the guests visiting. Each time I get up and speak I feel a little more comfortable and I encourage anyone who needs to speak publicly but does not enjoy it to give it a whirl.

88 Years of Living

Wow.....I feel as though I have been away for quite awhile. I haven't had the time to keep in touch as much as I would like to between travel and working on and in both my businesses.

I did have a great evening on August 30th though when I spent the evening with my Mother in Law . The occasion was the celebration of her 88th birthday. 88 years old or young depending upon how you want to look at it. She is really an amazing woman and I love to hear her talk about the old days.

She grew up in the same town I work in. Believe it or not it is quite small only about 1 square mile. And it was probably smaller 70 years ago ...the population count I mean...and yet it had 3 of what they called department stores along with the butcher and the grocer and the banker. Everyone it seems raised their own poultry or hunted for it. Many people had a cow or two and most of the surrounding area was farmland.

She loves to tell me stories of who owned which shop and what is there now. A simple life but they had lot's of fun she'll say as she relates the parties and recreation they took part in.

I stop and think about it as I run to the Dunkin Donuts for my afternoon coffee and pull up to the drive through window at one of the banks now in town. Yes we still have the butcher but no department stores.

We are still very small town but I love to visualize what it was like when my Mother In Law was living here. I love to hear her stories of being a young bride married to my Father in Law who was in the service. How during war times they had no money or silverware. For quite sometime they shared one spoon which is now framed...because of the memories it holds.

88 years of living has brought many changes. More so than I have probably witnessed because of the huge strides in technology that have been made in the last 50-60 years. For me I prefer to talk to someone who has lived through history than just watch it on TV.
